Luxury vinyl flooring has exploded in popularity across Texas homes, and for good reason. It’s durable, stylish, waterproof, and available in a wide range of looks—from wood to stone to tile. But before you start tearing open those boxes and snapping planks into place, there’s an important question we hear all the time from customers at our Rockwall and San Antonio showrooms: Do you really need to acclimate luxury vinyl flooring before installing it?
The short answer: Yes. And skipping this step can lead to big problems later.
What does it mean to acclimate luxury vinyl flooring?
Acclimating flooring is the process of allowing it to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room where it will be installed. Most luxury vinyl products (whether plank or tile) are made of layers that expand and contract slightly based on climate conditions. If you install vinyl straight out of the box, and the indoor climate is very different from where it was stored or shipped, that shift can cause buckling, gapping, or warping.
Think of it like your body adjusting to Texas heat after spending all day in air conditioning. Flooring needs time to “settle in” before it’s nailed, glued, or clicked into place.
Why do luxury vinyl floors need time to adjust to your home?
Here’s the thing: Texas weather isn’t exactly subtle. We’ve got heat, humidity, and constant temperature swings between seasons. That can affect your subfloor, indoor humidity levels, and the product itself. Luxury vinyl flooring is resilient, but not immune.
Most manufacturers recommend acclimating vinyl for at least 24 to 48 hours before installation.
Even if the vinyl is labeled as “rigid core” or “dimensionally stable,” it still benefits from that buffer time, especially in homes with HVAC systems running full blast in summer or heaters warming up rooms in winter.
Skipping acclimation might save you a day upfront, but it could lead to permanent damage. That’s not a shortcut we’d ever recommend.
What happens if you skip acclimating LVP and LVT flooring?
We’ve seen it firsthand. When luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl plank flooring aren’t properly acclimated, several issues can show up within weeks or even days:
· Buckling: Planks rise up at the edges or center.
· Gapping: Visible spaces form between planks.
· Peaking: Planks push against each other and lift.
· Click-lock failure: The interlocking system comes loose due to stress.
These aren’t cosmetic issues. They affect the floor’s stability and lifespan. And they often void the manufacturer’s warranty. So yes, that “small” detail could cost you thousands.
How do you acclimate luxury vinyl flooring the right way?
It’s easy. Just follow these steps:
1. Bring the flooring inside: Move the unopened boxes into the room where you plan to install them. Don’t leave them in a garage or storage shed.
2. Lay them flat: Stack the boxes flat on the floor (not upright), and space them out a little to allow air to flow.
3. Maintain a stable environment: Keep the room between 65°F and 85°F, and make sure the humidity stays between 35% and 75%. This is especially important during Texas summer and winter seasons.
4. Wait 24–48 hours: Let the vinyl sit in that environment for at least a full day—two days is even better.
Following these steps allows your flooring to match the conditions it will live in permanently, which means fewer headaches down the road.
