Fun fact: Tiles have been around for thousands of years. The earliest known example is from Egypt in the year 4,000 BC. In the 13th and 14th centuries, church floors were covered with decorative ceramics.

Not too long ago, tile flooring was primarily for the kitchen and bath but, with the versatility and amount of variations in colors, shapes, sizes, and designs, it's become the installation of-choice for many rooms.

Bigger is better

This is good news for porcelain tile lovers! While porcelain is a type of ceramic, its' composition of fine clay also includes sand and glass. Then it?s fired at higher temperatures and this all makes it heavier, denser and more durable.

As a result, it?s better for heavily trafficked floors, such as those in kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways.

Porcelain can be made to look like anything, including marble and other stones, leather, wood, etc. Ceramic tiles can, too, but some people prefer the larger format because the fewer seems to make it look more realistic, like a quarry slab. Marble bathrooms are all the trend right now, so you might want to consider this.

How has inkjet technology transformed ceramic and porcelain?

Inkjet technology is an advanced "printer-like" process that gives precision and fine detail to just about any pattern. Previously, only screen printing and roto-processes were used and, while these are good, they also result in a sort of ?cookie cutter-like pattern.?

With inkjet technology, patterns are unique, and you can go for a very long time without seeing the same one repeated on the flooring.

It?s especially useful in wood-look tile, a trend that is expected to dominate for at least 15 years. It?s so precise, you?ll see every grain, wormhole, knot and more. Any tile service loves this technology.

A word about installation

Tile is tricky. It?s difficult to cut ad requires a special saw cutter. If there's a problem with the layout, there's no going back. Best to leave this to a professional service.
