Getting ready to install tile flooring in your home? Before you even think about laying down that first tile, there’s one essential step you can’t afford to overlook: preparing your subfloor. At CW Floors and Lighting, we’ve seen how skipping this step can lead to cracks, uneven surfaces, and costly repairs. So, let’s talk about how to prep your subfloor the right way because your tile is only as strong as the surface beneath it.
Why subfloor prep matters more than you think
Tile flooring looks tough. And it is when it’s supported correctly. But if your subfloor isn’t level, dry, clean, and structurally sound, that beautiful tile job can go downhill fast. Think cracked grout lines, loose tiles, or worse, complete do-overs.
Tile flooring doesn’t bend or flex. That means even tiny imperfections in your subfloor can eventually lead to big problems. When we help customers with tile flooring projects, we always start by checking the foundation. It’s not glamorous work but the key to a long-lasting, flawless floor.
Start with a clean slate: remove old flooring
First things first. If there’s existing flooring like carpet, laminate, vinyl, or even old tile, it needs to come up. You can’t install new tile over an uneven or damaged surface. Pull everything up and inspect what’s underneath.
Watch for glue residue, leftover nails or staples, or old underlayment. All of that has to go. The goal is to get down to the bare subfloor, either plywood or concrete, so you can see what you’re working with.
Inspect and repair any damage
Once your subfloor is exposed, check it for damage. If you see rot, water stains, warping, or crumbling edges, stop right there. That damage needs to be fixed before anything else.
For wood subfloors, look for soft spots, loose boards, or squeaks. These can be signs of structural issues that need reinforcement. For concrete subfloors, check for large cracks, spalling, or damp areas. You don’t want moisture coming up into your tile.
At our tile stores in Rockwall and San Antonio, TX, we’ve had homeowners bring in pictures of their subfloor issues, and we always advise: don’t tile over problems. Fix them first, or you’ll regret it.
Make sure everything is level
Leveling is a big deal. Tile flooring doesn’t hide dips or high spots. Use a long level or a straight edge to see if your floor has any inconsistencies.
If your concrete subfloor isn’t level, use a self-leveling compound to even it out. It’s easy to pour and spreads out on its own. For wood subfloors, you might need to sand high spots or use leveling boards and compounds for the low areas.
Leveling takes time, but it’s worth every minute. Your tile will look smoother, and you’ll avoid hollow spots that lead to tile cracks.
Check moisture and seal if needed
Especially here in Texas, we see a lot of moisture issues with slab foundations. Concrete can soak up water from the ground and release it upward, which is terrible news for your tile and grout.
Use a moisture meter to test your subfloor. If it’s too damp, you’ll need to address the source of the moisture and possibly install a moisture barrier or sealer before you tile.
We stock moisture barrier products in-store and can help you pick the right one based on your project.
Add underlayment or backer board
Once your subfloor is clean, level, and dry, the next step is underlayment. This layer acts as a bridge between the subfloor and tile flooring. For wood subfloors, cement backer board is a must. For concrete, a crack-isolation membrane can be a smart move.
Install the underlayment with proper spacing, fasteners, and adhesive. Taping the seams is essential—it helps create a solid, tile-ready surface.
